Color: Black; Price: $105; Buy: Nordstrom, CALPAK; Collection: Kaya Collection
First things first, some history on why I got this backpack. I’m on a journey to find the best travel backpack that is fit for my body size and weight. Something easy to carry and not have to struggle with back problems. I have scoliosis, so I need to make sure that my back is protected along with the belongings I bring with me.
Note: I am 5 ft and weight about 105lbs.
The CALPAK Kaya Laptop Backpack initially attracted me because of how stylish it looked and the fact that it has a suitcase back strap. I like the idea that I can prop this backpack on the suitcase handle and not have to worry about it wobbling or falling. I absolutely hate the idea of having to stop my footing just to correct the backpack that was hanging on my suitcase because my back gave out on carrying it.
I originally bought the backpack from the CALPAK website and I believe I got it on sale (during a special time of the year… I’m sure you can find promo codes if you look hard enough). What initially stood out from the backpack was the faux leather exterior and the fact that it was stylish and super cute. They have really good models because when you see them holding the backpack (I’m sure with NOTHING IN IT) it looks amazing. I knew at that moment when I pictured the backpack and my suitcase together. They would look amazing together. I knew I would break peoples neck looking at my luggage choices.
THE BACKPACK
I like that the main compartment is 15.5” x 11.5” x 4.5” and with this backpack comes with separate compartment for the laptop that is 15” x 9.8” x 1”. I liked that it had adjustable straps for easy weight distribution on the back and the main and interior had compartments for easy organization. I liked the details that came with the exterior faux leather with the leather lacing. I love the whole look of this backpack.

What I do like about the CALPAK Kaya Laptop Backpack is that well… it’s really cute! The structure of the bag is nice and flat. It has a large pocket on the front, two main compartments inside, and another large pocket inside, but on the flap side. The one thing I really like about this backpack is that it separates the laptop with its’ own section. It makes taking out my laptop very easy. I like the style of the backpack. It’s faux leather with some nice braiding accents going on its just all around super fashionable and stylish!

The straps on the backpack are adjustable and okay. I don’t think they are the most comfortable for the shoulders and I think it is because the faux leather is stiff.
THE DURABILITY
After months of using this backpack, I come to realize its’ limitations. I don’t think I would be able to use this backpack for everyday use and if I do, this backpack would not be ideal for traveling unless you’re planning on packing light. This backpack ripped upon putting my essentials in it. You just really can’t overpack it. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to travel with this especially during rain season because of the rip.

OVERALL

Things I wish improved would be the stitching or gluing on the backpack. Maybe a bigger capacity and a pocket for water bottles. I also wished the texture of the faux leather wasn’t so stiff as well. I love that it holds its shape, but I really wish it had a softer leather that way it would really be flexible when I placed my things in it. I really wanted to like this backpack, but unfortunately because of the rip and the limited capacity I’d have to give it an overall rating of:
⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 🌟
